In support of our ongoing pro bono partnership with Arts Law Centre of Australia, Gadens has recently participated in our third outreach trip with Arts Law.
Gadens Lawyer, Jessica Smith travelled to Alice Springs with Lawyer and Arts Law Head of Legal and Operations, Katherine Giles to visit Ikuntji Artists in Haasts Bluff and Hermannsberg Potters in Hermannsberg (Ntaria). The trip involved a lot of driving through beautiful parts of the Northern Territory with plenty of stops for photos along the way.
Jessica and Katherine helped the arts centres to create tailored Artist and Art Centre Agreements, which ensures that the partnerships between the art centres and the local artists is documented by way of a fulsome agreement which enables the art centres to continue representing artists, promoting their work and arranging for the sales and licensing of their artwork.
The trip also resulted in Jessica and Katherine assisting artists with drafting and creating their wills for the first time, with a number of artists having their wills updated following a previous Arts Law outreach trip some years ago. The artists were grateful for the legal advice and the peace of mind to know that their affairs and the ongoing sale and licensing of their artwork will be in accordance with their wishes when the time eventually comes.
Sophie McNamara, Gadens Partner and Head of Sustainability and Social Impact, commented on Gadens support of First Nations communities and ongoing relationship with Arts Law:
“Gadens has a longstanding history of supporting First Nations, providing crucial assistance and advocacy for the vulnerable and marginalised members of various communities.
“We feel very fortunate to have a strong partnership with Arts Law which allows us to come together and continue to participate in these outreach trips, dedicating our time to making a difference in the lives of people in these communities.
“This might be our third trip, but certainly not our last, and we’re eager to participate in the coming years.”
Katherine Giles, Arts Law Head of Legal and Operations added:
“Arts Law is incredibly grateful for the support provided by Gadens for the outreach trip to Ikuntji Artists and Hemannsburg Potters, and for all the support provided by Gadens over the years for the outreach trips and volunteer legal advice service.
“It wouldn’t be possible for Arts Law and the Artists in the Black service to provide legal advice and wills via outreach trips without the support provided by Gadens and each of the individual lawyers who provide their time and services to artists in some of the most remote parts of Australia.”
Gadens is proud of its ongoing partnership with Arts Law. Having recently received Arts Law’s Pro Bono Award for the second year in a row, we look forward to continuing to support Arts Law to ensure that Australian artists and art organisations receive legal advice, education and resources.
