Attorney-General Martin Pakula announced on Tuesday 8 August 2017 that Victorian Court of Appeal judge, Justice Anne Ferguson, has been appointed as Victoria’s Chief Justice – the top judicial role in Victoria. Justice Ferguson was previously a partner at Gadens and its predecessor firm, J.M. Smith & Emmerton.
Grant Scott-Hayward, Gadens Chief Executive Officer, said:
“On behalf of everyone at Gadens we congratulate our alumnus, Justice Anne Ferguson, on this esteemed appointment. Gadens is very proud of its alumni and the key roles they have gone on to fill in not only Victoria, but across Australia too. We are delighted to see one of our alumni, and someone who is as widely respected as Justice Anne Ferguson, appointed as Chief Justice”.
On 20 April 2010, Justice Ferguson was appointed to the Supreme Court bench. She was the first practising female solicitor appointed directly as a Supreme Court judge. Justice Ferguson, who has had a distinguished legal career, was appointed to the Court of Appeal from the Supreme Court on 12 August 2014.
She will become Victoria’s 12th chief justice, taking over from the highly-respected Marilyn Warren who steps down on 1 October 2017.
