James specialises in complex commercial disputes, insolvency disputes, contentious regulatory matters and royal commissions.
James has extensive experience acting for corporations (including financial services institutions and other ASX listed corporations), and government entities and regulators. James also advises directors and officers, insolvency practitioners, and creditors in insolvency matters.
Before being admitted to practice in NSW, James practiced as a barrister in South Africa, where he also specialised in complex commercial disputes, contentious regulatory matters and insolvency.
James’ experience as both a solicitor and as a barrister enables him to bring a unique strategic and forensic approach to his clients’ matters.
His litigious matters, both in South Africa and in Australia, have typically involved disputes relating to contractual interpretation, the enforcement of contractual undertakings, misleading or deceptive conduct, and administrative law issues.
For the duration of the Financial Services Royal Commission, James was one of the members of Suncorp’s internal Royal Commission response team. While he worked on all aspects of Suncorp’s response, he was primarily tasked with managing its general insurance response to the Royal Commission.
